The students brought truth and raw emotions. They tackled racism, abuse, politics, bullying, suicide, and much more.
Some of the student’s poems brought tears to the eyes of many, but the tears were of joy and understanding. Their voices were loud and every word penetrated the hearts of nearly everyone in the room.
I truly believe that the students who performed this past weekend are the generation of change. Their voices will impact the lives of others around the world that face the same struggles and everyday pressures of the world. The platform for many generations to come has been set thanks to this brave and creative group of students.
Some students were upset because they did not make it into the finals but they were reminded that it’s not the points that matter, it’s the poetry! Although it was a competition, no one can put a number on a creative ensemble of words and expression. At the end of the day everyone is a winner.
On the last day of the competition, those who did not make it came back to support all the other poets. They were true troupers and supporters and that what matters the most. I’m excited about next year’s “Louder than a Bomb Poetry Slam” and I know the students’ creativity will be more powerful than ever before. If you missed out this year, please come out next year. I guarantee you won’t regret it!
Great job, poets. See you next year!
